2013-08-21 Neutron scattering has been a very powerful probe in the research to the lattice and magnetic structures of various kinds of materials now. In this paper, I will first give a brief introduction of the history of neutron scattering. Then, in the second part, I will talk about the properties of neutron scattering, present its basic mechanism and unique properties. Neutron scattering is among the crucial characterization techniques necessary to ensure a world-leading position in materials research for the United States. The uniqueness of the neutron as a probe for matter and energy makes it an essential tool for the discovery and delivery of knowledge that is complementary to other probes such as photons and electrons.

A general understanding of neutron scattering instruments (elastic, inelastic) and neutron optical transport technology. Demonstrated success in working with a multi-disciplinary team in a dynamic research environment. A strong record of scientific publication. The Second Target Station (STS) is a >$1Billion, Department of Energy project to be constructed at the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The STS will provide wholly new capabilities for the study of a broad range of materials with neutron scattering and support thousands of users from the physical, materials, and applied sciences and industry. Most neutron scattering instruments, including those at SNS and HFIR, have them.” Anderson led a team of inventors including Amy Elliott of ORNL, who specializes in binder jet printing, and ORNL neutron scattering scientist Bianca Haberl, an expert in using neutrons to study materials in extreme-pressure environments.
